The Museum of Garden History is in the historic church of St. Mary-at-Lambeth, where the Tradescant family tomb can be seen in the garden.

John Tradescant the elder (c1570 - 1638) and his son John (c1608 - 1662), were gardeners to Charles I and II, enthusiastic collectors of curiosities and adventurous plant hunters.
They introduced many flowers, shrubs and trees from Africa, Europe, Russia and North America.
Many of the plants we grow today can be traced back to introductions made by the Tradescants and other plant hunters.

The Tradescant Trust was created in 1977 to save the church from demolition and form the first Museum of Garden History.
Many years of hard work and intensive fundraising have resulted in a beautifully restored building and an extensive museum collection.
The Trust now looks to the future growth of the Museum as an information resource and a visual history of gardening.

The historic tool collection, artefacts and information panels provide an intriguing overview of garden history.
You can delve into our horticultural past and learn more about the Tradescants and other plant hunters.
St.Mary-at-Lambeth has a fascinating history and many important memorials remain, including the tombs of Captain Bligh of the Bounty and the Sealy family of Coade stone fame.

The seventeenth century style knot garden is a peaceful haven, full of plants traced back to that period.
Fine topiary adds structure to the garden and old roses, herbacious perennials, annuals and bulbs provide colour and scent in summer.

The Garden at the Ark is open on selected days.
A modern paved garden, it is intricately designed and provides inspiration and pleasure to many visitors each year.
The Ark and garden may be hired for corporate or private functions and is licensed for weddings.
