I have had a dwarf lilac tree for about 4 years. It was virtually just a stick when I bought it, but it is about 6 foot tall it looks very healthy but why does it not produce lilac? Any help would be appreciated. Debra |

I would like to grow lilac in my garden, there is a well established tree nearby, can you tell me how I can take a cutting and get it to grow in my garden. |

|
From Alex M, UK
Hi Paul, firstly get the permission of your neighbour to take cuttings otherwise
it is tantamount to 'Theft'. During July/August take 3"-4" (75-100m) heeled cuttings off half ripe shoots.Insert the cuttings in equal parts by volume Peat and sharp sand (sometimes known as River sand) . Place on a hot bed to set to give a bottom heat of 16*C (61*F). Regularly spray (mist) them to prevent them drying out. When rooted pot up individually into 4" (100mm) pots of potting compost. Grow on for a couple of years before putting in final setting.
n.b. it might be easier to find some 'suckers' that grow from the base of the tree and plant them up..............A
