Art Stone
From: William H, UK

Does anyone know where I can purchase concrete or art stone balustrade?
Thanks in anticipation

From Neil, UK
There is a place on the Isle Of Sheppey, Kent.
They produce four types of balustrade. They have just started to produce a new range (very good quality balustrade for the amount it costs)
Their address is
J & P Garden Ornamnets
Argent Road
Queenborough
Isle Of Sheppey
Kent

From Elizabeth, UK
What you really need is a Reclaimation Yard. There you will find (being prepared to hunt around and probably stay the weekend) absolutely everything from old bricks to iron railings - suitably rusty of course), the odd statue etc. etc. and etc. No good looking in a 'smart desireable semi' area it's London or another big city beeing upgraded you need. What fun it is ........I'm barred from such places now unfortunately by a normally very tolerant husband.
However, I have just come across an advertisement in Gardeners World magazine - Quality Balustrading, Planters, Sundials etc. etc.
Full colour Brochure Tel. 01458-834320 or www.torstone.com

Burner
From: Frances, South Wales, UK

I am looking for a portable burner. It uses a pressurised fuel - parafin I think. Not one of those 'weed wands'. I know they are still made, as I saw one at a garden centre in Saltash in Cornwall last summer. Does anyone know what they are called? Or who makes them? Or where they can be found in the South Wales/Welsh Borders area? Frances

From Mr Clark, UK
You can get them from the Organic Gardening Catalogue, Riverdene Business Park, Molesley Road, Hersham, Surrey KT12 4RG. Cost £27.75. Tel 01932 253666

From Mr Clark, UK
They are called blow torches; 1 runs on parafin, the other from a pressurised calor gas canister about the size of a large pineapple slices tin. If it is one of those burners used by plumbers to solder lead seals on water pipes, I would look for an old type hardware shop - traditionalist - or a plumbers suppliers company.

Canadian Grass
From: Mick, UK

Can you tell me where I can get canadian grass from? Also how and when to sow it. Thanks

From James, UK
I am not sure if they will do the specific varieties you are looking for but have a look at www.seedman.com. This is one of the best sites I have found for buying seeds from. Their range is enormous with seeds from all around the world. Their service has been excellent for the purchases I have made. Last year I ordered a selection pack of seeds from them for my brother's birthday to be sent to him in Italy and they even included a birthday card on my behalf, free of charge!!
There is, however, one major problem. I spend far too much when I order from them... the choice is just too tempting :)

Children's Gloves
From: Victoria F, UK

I love to help in the garden, but I would like a pair of gardening gloves like mummy and daddy wear. Do you know where I can get some please?

From Gardeners Club Member, UK
You can now get child-size gardening gloves at national trust gift shops. They are only the cotton sort and come with a trowel and fork.

From Frances, South Wales, UK
Hi Victoria, I know the problem. It is often the same for ladies with small hands. The small gloves are made of nearly all cotton and don't give any protection and the better ones that protect you from thorns and things are too big and too stiff so you can't do anything when you wear them! The solution we found for our son was a small pair of all leather gloves from the woodwork section of a local DIY store. They were still too big, but the leather was soft enough not to be too clumsy. If they tend to slip off, rubber bands round the wrists can help - but not if they are too tight. It is not a perfect solution, but the only other one is to grow! Frances, South Wales

Disabled Gardening
From: Doug S, UK

I have a friend who unfortunately broke his back and is about to be released from Stoke Mandeville. Whilst he is likely to be in a wheelchair for the rest of his life he is a keen gardener and wants to continue to look after his garden as far as he can. However he is having difficulty finding firms who supply tools etc for wheelchair users and I wondered if this was an area with which you could help.

From Caroline, London
You should try contacting Arthritis Care (www.arthritiscare.org.uk) or call them on 0207 30 6500 - their information department will be able to provide you with full details of any organisations who provide such tools. Hope that helps!

Electric Thermometer
From: Norman, UK

I am looking for a electric themometer which I can set so that it switches on my tubular heaters at the first sign of frost. I do not know the correct name for it. I have asked in garden centres for it but to no avail. Any help would be appreciated. Many thanks

From James, UK
What you are looking for is commonly known as a froststat. This is basically a standard thermostat which can be set to operate at a low temperature. These can generally be set to about 4 to 5 deg C to switch the heaters on when there is a risk of frost. You should be able to find these at any garden centre that does greenhouse accessories or from the greenhouse suppliers, if they do heating as well. The thermostats are generally oil filled rod type which are mounted on brackets just below the roof. Take great care in wiring up your heaters, they should be cabled in Pyrotenax copper sheathed cable, or equivalent, with waterproof glands to at least IP57 and the circuit should be protected with an RCCB.

From TeeRex, UK
Hi Norman, I believe the "thermometer" that you are looking for is best known as a 'Frost-stat' You should be able to get one by checking out any Electrical Dealers in your local area, I've no idea of the price unfortunately.

Fertilizer
From: June, Leamington Spa

Hi. I am looking for a good soil fertiliser as I am unable to spread horse manure on my garden as it is far too long a walk with a barrow. My garden plot is 40ft x 20ft and I have two plots. I am looking for a fertiliser I can throw onto my garden and then dig in. Can anyone suggest one and know where I can get it online as I live in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire and nobody seems to sell what I want around here. I have been told it is a mixture of Blood and bonemeal I need. Can anyone help please as my produce is just not producing. Thank you.

From Hilary, UK
You can buy cow manure in pellet form. Just throw it on and let the rain wash it in. You can get it from Sutton Seeds by mail order. Sorry, I don't have their address anymore. You can also get chicken manure in pellet form from any good garden centre.

From Mr Clark, UK
Use nature's way and dig in garden compost in the Autumn and save your self some money. The rest is supplement to this method. In the meantime, dig in your grass clippings and some horse manure from now until Autumn.

Frog Spawn
From: Mr Clark, UK

When & where does one look for frog spawn in a town park for my 10 year old boy. We had a frog & toad staying in our garden for a short time, in a frog house.

From Michael Barratt, the Gardeners Club resident gardener
Firstly you need to find someone with a pond, as this is likely to be one of the first places that you will find frog spawn. Still and sheltered water is important for the developing tadpoles. Are there any local schools with wildlife area, as these are invariably designed and constructed with water in mind. Failing that maybe a friendly neighbour with a pond only too keen to get rid of it?

From Christina, UK
I believe it's illegal to remove frog/toad spawn from the wild i.e ponds in parks etc. The best way to get some is to find a friend with some spawn in their pond and take some of that and hope that it develops and you get a resident population of amphibians. However, from my own experience I've found that blackbirds are partial to tadpoles when said tadpoles come to the surface and congregate around the edge of a pond.
Good luck.

Garden Vac
From: Fox C, UK

I'm looking for a garden vac for a Christmas present - do you have any suggestions on a reasonably priced one?

From Colin C, UK
You need to be more specific. I have tried both electric & petrol driven and settled for an Echo ES 2400 which is excellent for extensive leaf collection & shredding. Only buy an electric (cheaper) model if its for use in a small garden with just a few small trees. I have a 70 yr. old Copper Beech and two 45 yr. old Acers which demand regular leaf collection every autumn. My machine is in use for an hour or so at a time, first blowing leaves into a pile then 5 mins. changing round tubes to enable vac & shred. Petrol machines work better than electric when leaves are wet - electric machines get through the replaceable cutters rather quickly, even when leaves are dry. I hope this info will help you. Regards, Colin

From Mr Clark, UK
At argos for £39.99. I use mine to even reduce polystyrene beads to mix with multi-purpose compost etc. I believe it helps to keep the compost a little warmer long term than it would otherwise be.
