This is the area of the site to post questions that you may have about
gardening. Hopefully another club member will be able to answer it for
you! And
remember your fellow gardeners are relying on you to help them too so
why not see if you can answer a couple of questions while you're here?

| Magnolia
Tree |
From
Sue & Steve, Herts |
 |
We have a Magnolia tree that is about 15 yrs old flowers regularly
and is very healthy looking. This last week we have noticed some
pods with orange seedlike pods that have popped. The outer part
of the pod is almost maroon in colour. What are they and if they
are seeds when do we plant them?

| Mandarino |
From
Colin, UK |
 |
hi,i have a miniature cytrus nobilis(mandarino),which is kept
in our porch watered little and often and fed with a citrus feed
every week.At the moment it is looking a bit poorly, dropping most
of it's leaves and secreting a sticky sap like substance.I'm not
sure if it is because it doesn't like being indoors,as it was
outside when i bought it from the garden centre or because i'm
am feeding it wrongly,I would be very grateful for any advice.thanks

| Redesign |
From
Brian, UK |
 |
We are changing our scrappy lawn for a 'dry garden' and have hired
a local
gardener. He has put membrane all over (without removing the grass
first)
and then created areas of gravel, path and 3 flower beds. These
have been
created by enclosing areas with sleepers and filling with soil.
I thought
he'd cut away the lower membrane (taking out the grass), then
filling with
the soil and putting the membrane over the top, plus mulch. However,
he is
'sandwiching' the soil by adding more membrane on top (though
looser weave)
plus mulch. Since the flower beds are not deep (about a foot high)
he has
cut small holes in the lower membrane to plant some birds of paradise.
However, the reason we changed the lawn was because there was
only two
inches of clay topsoil placed over rock when the house was built
three years
ago and the grass was struggling.
I
am worried that the soil will become sour, or the plants will
have
problems finding enough place for roots........ with the lower
membrane in
the way.
The
more the so called gardening expert works on the garden, the more
I am
losing confidence in his his knowledge or ability.
Any
ideas??

| Silver
Birch |
From
Deeds, UK |
 |
Can anyone help with my silver birch tree? The bark appears to
be splitting, the leaves have a black stain on them (definitely
not removable), and appears very floppy. It has lived in a little
shrubbery for 21 years with various other plants, I’m not
green fingered but know 1 of them to be a rhododendron. The shrubbery
was very overgrown when I moved in (approx 1 year) and has been
hacked back- please trust me this was the only way to prune the
lot! Everything has been fed with bone meal and chicken dung and
bark has been laid on the ground to no improvement as yet.
Hoping
someone can advise

| Turf |
From
Philip, UK |

Hi my name is Philip and have been receiving emails from your
web site now for a few week's now. I was hopping that some one
could help me I have got a garden that is all concrete slab's
and the weed's have grown through so much that I cant even see
the slab's anymore. I was hoping to returf the whole garden but
im unsure as to how to proceed.
So starting from scratch lets just say that I have pulled up all
the slabs and I have just got a garden full of weed's, What do
I need and what do I do with it?
I know that it's alote of details for such a small problem but
I don't want to spend all that money and mess it up you know.
If there is a book or leaflet I could get then please tell me.
I have been to my local garden centre and they were well lets
just say that they may aswell have been running a pet shop because
that was all they seemed to sell and knowbody seemed to know anything
about gardening? When I asked for a spade the lady just gave me
a dumb founded look.
so please can you help yours Mr P.Jones

| Vine
- Black Hamburg |
From
Mrs C, Kent |
 |
We have a black hamburg vine in our north kent garden which we
planted about 6 years ago. It is in a sheltered spot facing wet
and has a pergola in front to climb up. We seem to have large
amount of green foliage, but so far no grapes. I have tried pruning
back the offshoots, without much luck – obviously doing
something wrong! Can any one advise? We don’t feed it, and
water only when the ground is really dry, as I have heard that
grapes prefer to be treated mean..
Any
advice welcome
