Welcome to the Gardeners Club

May 2004
This months winner...Jean Miller from Tayside
I had never had a garden until 10 yrs ago but soon caught the gardening bug and in 2000 extended the existing 70' X 15' to
70' X 70' by dint of persuading my neighbour to sell me half of hers! I cleared the ground myself , digging up enough boulders for a dry stone rockery with a water rill and a central raised bed. These and the new patio and lawn were done by professionals but the beds were mine and they have gradually got larger over the last 4 years. My fascination with plants led to a small greenhouse ,3 cold frames & a small vegetable patch as well as shrubs & flowers and I take cuttings, save seeds, pot on,dig ,water , weed, make compost & leaf mould to my hearts content- but I hate cutting the grass!
The photos are of the back garden (which is actually the front of the house) but I also have beds on either side of my 70' drive planted with shrubs, clematis, honeysuckle & hollyhocks, a gravel bed at one side of the house and a shady bed at the other side.
I did not design the garden, apart from the hard landscaping, I just let it happen - if I see a plant I like I will find a space for it and if I find it too big or small for that spot I'll move it-my plants are reputed to be on wheels! I call it a higgeldy -piggeldy garden with fruit bushes in among the shrubs and sweet peas climbing up wigwams in the vegetable patch .It definitely wouldn't win a medal at Chelsea but it's just the way I like it.

If you think your garden could be up for next month's title, use the information on the main 'Garden Of The Month' page to let us know all about it.
